The system
What orthokeratology is, and where VIPOK fits
Orthokeratology reduces refractive error and improves unaided vision by using rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses to gradually reshape the cornea. Today it is also a tool for controlling myopia progression.
Four levels of ortho-k design
Since the 1960s, ortho-k lens designs have advanced in four steps. Each reaches further, and each needs more understanding to fit and troubleshoot.

Lens geometry
VIPOK® and VIPOK® II are four-curve, double reverse geometry lenses: an optic zone (OZ), reverse curve (RC), alignment curve (AC) and peripheral curve (PC).
Reading the fit
Ideal VIPOK fit = bullseye fluorescein pattern + good centration + 0.1 mm movement with the blink.
Ortho-k and laser correction are not competitors
Both change the cornea to change refraction, but they serve different patients. Laser vision correction should only be performed on adults. Ortho-k's benefits to children are substantial.
A myopic child can start with ortho-k for myopia control and later choose laser correction for a more permanent change. It is up to eye care providers to offer that path.
Published studies from university research groups show orthokeratology is safe and effective. Success depends on training: practitioners need proper instruction before fitting, and patients need to learn lens care and keep up with follow-up visits.

For approved VIPOK doctors
The reference chart and lens selector are available to licensed optometrists and ophthalmologists with an approved VIPOK account.
Rows run from A (flattest) to ZE (steepest). Moving up or down a row within a column adjusts the fit; fluorescein changes usually show only after two or more rows. If only the nightwear option is used, column 08 lenses can be dispensed directly without power adjustment. US Patent No. 6,361,169 (status to confirm).

What is different about the VIPOK™ design and system?
Three things. First, a reference chart and inventory system for efficient fitting and dispensing. Second, the design can be fitted for day or night wear and worn more than 12 hours without tightening. Claim under review Third, the pricing structure makes the practice more profitable over time.
Where is the VIPOK™ design available?
In the United States, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Hong Kong. The design came from fitting more than two thousand eyes, in collaboration between optometrists and ophthalmologists.
How much office space does VIPOK™ ortho-k need?
The same as normal contact lens fitting and dispensing: an examination room, a teaching room, and a waiting and file storage area.
If VIPOK™ uses stock inventory lenses, can it really be precise?
Yes. Each stock lens is individually calculated for how corneas change from center to periphery, and for the subtle differences between flat and steep corneas. Fitting accuracy is higher than most custom designs, with fewer reorders and trial fittings. It also removes errors from data transfer, calculation and measurement differences.
How do patients know they received genuine VIPOK® lenses?
Every lens dispensed by a certified VIPOK doctor is individually shrink-wrapped. Patients can ask to see the original package before taking lenses home.
